Why use webapps instead of apps such as Lotus or Sharepoint?

I often hear the argument that you can do everything you want with the big apps. Why would you want to do that? You have already done 95 percent of “everything you want” in your brain, you just need that extra 5 percent of tasks and calculations (read my earlier post The survival of a web application).

With larger apps you are forced into unflexible and fixed solutions that is based more on the history of the app and sales department goals than on human behaviour and usability. Feature A, B, C, D and so on might be there but they might not be what you want or act like you want them to act. It forces its logics and structures on you, slows you down and in the end it hurts your business. Not to mention that it puts you in the hands of one lazy expensive company when it comes to updates and real customization.

95 percent of the work you do in a large app is in the end harmful to your business.

If you instead create your own palette of webapps you will get a working environment that is far more based on your logics and behaviour and as soon as you find an alternate app you can easily change/update your palette.

Feature A, B, C, D and so on is still here but now you can customize your palette to fit your needs in detail.

Ps. illustrations were made on my Sony Ericsson P1i while on vacation in Thailand :-)

PPs. Cutting costs might also be a real good incitement. Read about Quist that says they save up to $70.000 by switching from Microsoft products to Apple and webapps.
